• Sunsetting

Reading the sentiment going around the community regarding sunsetting has me thinking:

It is not sustainable to create a loot game that people play as a career.

I totally understand that if you’re playing 8 hours a day, 6 days a week that there would eventually come a time after 6 years where you would grow tired of it. I grow tired of Destiny too. It’s because I play it so much. But I play no where near as much as a lot of these community players. But there is simply no way Bungie can keep up with the demands of these people. At some point they have to realize that.

I see sunsetting as painful but totally necessary.

    • No sunsetting -> You have a huge arsenal of God Rolls, and have no incentive to grind for anything new.
    • Sunsetting (with re-issues) -> I don’t want to grind content to get new versions of weapons I already have.
    • Sunsetting (only new stuff) -> Bungie likely doesn’t have the resources to produce this much new content.

Most big MMO’s sunset stuff BTW.

I have actually enjoyed the new slate of weapons this season, and have a spent quite a lot of time using them. One final thought. let’s say Bungie didn’t implement sunsetting this season. The same players would be most definitely be arguing (even more strongly), that they have no incentive to play the game and grind for anything.

Something I have been thinking about is that when it comes to weapons and sunsetting, Bungie needs to focus on giving people incentives to use all the weapons rather than focusing on obtaining all the weapons.

The “Splintered” Title has a requirement that you collect all of the Europa weapons. But imagine instead that it asked you to masterwork one of each of the Europa Weapons. AND, master-working changes in the sense that to complete it, you must complete an objective using that weapons (kills, multi-kill, etc) like obtaining a Ritual weapon. Give people a good reason to put down their Steady Hand and Felwinter’s Lie, and try something different.

    More “playing”, less “collecting”
